Making sustainability beautiful, affordable and more widely available brought Target to MIO’s CultureLab.

The result is an innovative collection of products for the garden, including the first composter ever available at Target stores and hybrid indoor and outdoor solar lights.

The products were developed in conjunction with Target’s existing vendors. An in-depth analysis of Target’s product categories was conducted to discover the category that could have the greatest environmental and cultural impact.

The designs selected for production articulate a sustainable vision. They demonstrate how products can be the transformed through materials, processes, and the creation of ecological habits and design experiences.

Anthropologie set out to create a display system that could inform customers about products while maintaining its visual identity.

Anthropologie’s visual coordinator worked with the CultureLab to develop a signage system that would work within the growing retailer’s constraints. The process focused on selecting durable, affordable materials that fit the store’s signature look.

The CultureLab developed a variety of proposals involving recycled paper pulp technologies. These proposals fit Anthropologie’s timing and production requirements. Serving as a liaison between the manufacturers and the client, CultureLab developed and managed the production of the system according to specifications.

The CultureLab’s design provided a coherent branding message using environmentally sound materials. Made from 100 percent waste paper and a steel base, the display units were designed for easy disassembly and recycling.

Research + Strategy
The CultureLab was brought in by Target Corporation to develop a strategy for deploying a re-usable bag campaign in an effective and design focused way.

The result was a research and resource document that outlined all the possibilities for encouraging re-usable bag behavior adoption. The document included proposals for bag design and construction, displays, signage and demographic centered concepts. The CultureLab’s proposal outlined the challeneges for effective adoption of re-usable bag behaviors and provided strategies for increasing sales and re-use conversion rates. In addition it created a road-map for extending recycling and environmental programs at the retail level.

When Bloomberg decided to replace their stationery and collateral with a new look, the company’s design team recognized an opportunity for sustainable design. Their mission to evolve old business cards into functional and beautiful objects brought them to the CultureLab.

Working closely with Bloomberg’s design team, the CultureLab developed a proposal to re-engineer these old business cards into “social design” examples for their new headquarters. MIO’s CultureLab engaged vendors to achieve the technical requirements necessary to create a seat from waste paper. The material was tracked and documented throughout the process and then shared with the Bloomberg community.

The result is the Up-cycled Chair: a stool sturdy enough to survive office use and elegant enough to contribute to Bloomberg’s dynamic environment. The design is a clear and compelling representation of corporate responsibility and creative ingenuity.
